This photograph of Judge Stewart F. Hancock was taken in September 1966 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, when he was Republican candidate for Congress. The photograph shows Hancock speaking with Dwight D. Eisenhower, the former U.S. President and commanding general of the victorious forces in Europe during World War II. Hancock made the pilgrimage to Gettysburg, Eisenhower’s retirement home, to get “tips on campaigning from the general.” Judge Hancock lost the election in November, which was Congress’ loss but the New York judiciary’s gain, as he went on to serve as a Justice of the Supreme Court and Appellate Division, Fourth Department, and an Associate Judge of the Court of Appeals.
