Chief Judge Edmund H. Lewis with Marian Anderson

Opera Singer Marian Anderson with Chief Judge Edmund H. Lewis

This photograph of Chief Judge Edmund H. Lewis shows him speaking with Marian Anderson, the great American opera singer and cultural figure who broke down racial barriers. She is perhaps best known for performing at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939, after she was denied permission to sing for an integrated audience at Washington’s DAR Constitution Hall. The photograph was taken in 1960 at a Syracuse University graduation ceremony, at which Anderson received an honorary degree. Lewis, then in retirement, was a trustee of Syracuse University.
