Justice Seymour Boyers was born on October 9, 1926 in Queens, NY. He graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School in 1945, served in the military, including the United States Army, from 1945-47, and then received his B.A. from Syracuse University in 1950. He attended Columbia University Teachers College from 1952-53, then received his LL.B. from New York University School of Law in 1954. He was admitted to the Bar on October 20, 1954.
In 1961, Boyers was elected to the City Council for the Fifth District in Queens and in 1963 he was elected as Councilman at Large. He also served on the State Assembly. He served as Justice of the Civil Court and the Supreme Court in Queens County before he was designated to the Appellate Division, Second Department on February 1, 1982. He stepped down from the bench in 1985.
Boyers has lectured at Emory Law School and at continuing legal education programs for the New York State Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Following his retirement from the Bench, Boyers joined the law firm of Gair, Gair, Conason, Steigman and Mackauf. His specializations include medical malpractice, products liability, anatomy of trauma, trying automobile accident cases, and negligence cases.
He co-authored an article, “The Lawyer’s Perspective,” for the book Controversies in Surgery. He was a national panel member for the American Arbitration Association, president of the Tenth Assembly District Democratic club, chair of the Advisory Board of the CUNY School of Law (1983-2002), chair of the Trial Lawyers Section of the New York State Bar Association (2002-2003), and chair of the Second Department Judicial Screening Commission. Boyers’ other memberships include the Commission on Fiduciary Appointments (2000-2004), the Board of Directors of the Supreme Court Justices Association of the City of New York, and the Special Commission on the Future of the Courts.
He has a wife, Joan.
