Court of Appeals Judges at Chief Judge Albert Conway’s Retirement

Court of Appeals Judges and Staff at Chief Judge Albert Conway's Retirement Ceremony

These photographs were taken on December 30, 1959 in the conference room at Court of Appeals Hall and show the retirement ceremony of Chief Judge Albert Conway (the man standing and speaking at the conference table) who had reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 and was stepping down from office the next day. To Chief Judge Conway’s immediate left in the top picture is Charles S. Desmond, who was elected the month before to succeed Conway as Chief Judge and would assume office on January 1, 1960. The other Judges sitting at the conference table in that picture, from right to left, are Charles W. Froessel, Stanley H. Fuld, Marvin R. Dye, John Van Voorhis and Adrian P. Burke. These photographs also include several members of Court of Appeals staff.
