Chief Judge Frank H. Hiscock and Associate Judge Emory A. Chase Walking by Court of Appeals Hall

In this photograph, Chief Judge Frank H. Hiscock and Associate Judge Emory A. Chase of the Court of Appeals are taking a stroll in front of the steps of the State Capitol in Albany. To the left of them is Court of Appeals Hall. The picture was taken in or about 1921, when both men served together on the Court of Appeals.

Hiscock was a widely respected Chief Judge, serving from 1917 to 1926, when he was succeeded as Chief by Benjamin Cardozo. Judge Chase served on the Court of Appeals for a brief period (1920-1921), spending most of his judicial career as a Justice of the Appellate Division, Third Department (1897-1920).

The picture is rare in that it is one of the few images of Court of Appeals Judges from the early 20th Century shown casually and in motion, as opposed to sitting on the bench or posing for a studio portrait.
