Attorney General of New York, 1853
Gardner Stow was born around the year 1790 in Orange, Franklin County, Massachusetts. In 1806, he commenced his legal studies in the Weston law firm in Sandy Hill, New York. Esek Cowen was also a student in that practice, and when Cowen was admitted to the bar, Stow continued his studies in the office of Gansevoort and Cowen in Saratoga County, New York. He was admitted to the bar in 1811, set up a law practice in Elizabethtown, and was the Essex County District Attorney in 1833. He also practiced law in Keeseville and in the Troy, N. Y., law firm of Stow and Cowen.
When Attorney General Levi Chatfield resigned on November 25, 1853, Governor Horatio Seymour appointed Gardner Stow to that office on December 8, 1853, to fill out the remainder of the term, which ended on December 31, 1853. He held office for less than one month.
