David T. Gibbons

Justice David T. Gibbons was born in Brooklyn. He earned degrees from St. John’s University and St. John’s University School of Law.

Gibbons joined the bench when he was appointed as a judge to the Nassau District Court in 1962. He ran for office a total of six times in eleven years before winning election to the Nassau County Court in 1967. In 1973, Gibbons was elected to the Supreme Court and in 1979, Gov. Hugh L. Carey appointed him to the Appellate Division, Second Department, where he served until his death.

Gibbons was married to Virginia Saal and had three daughters, Joan, Janet, and Jean Marie, five sons, David Jr., Robert, Brian, John, and Gregory, and 13 grandchildren. He died in Long Island on August 17, 1986 at the age of 65.
