Court of Appeals Courthouse Timeline

1847-1883

Old State Capitol

On September 7, 1847, and for almost four decades thereafter, the Court of Appeals held its sessions in the old State Capitol, in the second floor courtroom once occupied by the Supreme Court. The last session of the Court of Appeals held in the old Capitol took place in May 1883. The June Term of that year was held in Saratoga Springs.

1883

New State Capitol

On October 1, 1883, the Court convened, temporarily, in the Eidlitz-designed courtroom on the second floor of the new Capitol, while awaiting the completion of the new Richardson-designed courtroom on the third floor. In all, only the October through December Terms in 1883 were held in the Eidlitz Courtroom.

1883-Present

Court of Appeals Hall

The Court held its first session in the Richardson-designed courtroom on January 14, 1884. That courtroom was relocated from the Capitol to Court of Appeals Hall in 1917. There, the Court has held its sessions ever since.
