The Court of Assizes

The Court of Assizes was composed of the Governor, the Council and the Justices of the Peace in attendance. The Court of Assizes convened annually in New York City to hear appeals from the inferior courts and to exercise original jurisdiction in serious criminal matters. In later years, it exercised some legislative functions. The tribunal was the court of last resort unless the case was appealable to the Crown in London.
