Justice Stanley Harwood was born in Brooklyn. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II, then earned degrees from Columbia College in 1949 and Columbia University School of Law in 1952. He began his legal career as an attorney for the Department of the Navy from 1952 to 1954. Harwood worked in private practice, then as a law secretary for State Supreme Court Justice Joseph A. Suozzi from 1961 to 1965. He was elected to the State Assembly in 1965, and was named Democratic Chairman of Nassau County in 1973.
In 1981, Harwood was elected to the Nassau County Supreme Court. He was designated to the Appellate Division, Second Department in 1987 by Gov. Mario Cuomo. After retiring from the bench in 1992, he worked as a partner at Bower & Gardner, then at Jaspan Schlesinger Hoffman LLP and as a hearing officer at National Arbitration and Mediation.
Harwood was a member of the Nassau County Bar Association and served on its Board of Directors and as chairman of the Court Committee and Pro Bono Committee. He was also a member of the New York State Bar Association, New York State Trial Lawyers Association, and New York State Association of Supreme Court Justices..
He was married to Deborah and later to Cathleen Hamilton, and had four children and three stepchildren. He died on August 20, 2010 at the age of 84.
