Biography

Justice James F. Niehoff was born in Queens and graduated from St. John’s University School of Law in 1951. In 1962, while working as Deputy Town Attorney in Hempstead, Long Island he was named to the Town Council, and in the following year he won election as a Councilman for Hempstead.

Niehoff went on to serve as a Judge of the Nassau County District Court, as Administrative Judge of the District Court, and as a Justice of the State Supreme Court. He was designated to the Appellate Division, Second Department in 1981 and retired from the bench in 1987. Niehoff has lived in Highland Beach, Florida since 1994, where he has served on the community’s Charter Review Board, the Board of Adjustment, the Library Study Committee and the Historical Society.

Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors of St. John’s University School of Law alumni association.

He married Amelia Pansisus and has three children and three grandchildren.
