Chief Judge Irving Lehman is Sworn In

The picture of Chief Judge Irving Lehman was taken on December 30, 1939 at his home in 119 East 71 Street in New York City. The oath of office was administered by Chief Judge Frederick Crane (who had reached the mandatory retirement age of 70), and to Crane’s right is Herbert Lehman, Irving’s brother and the Governor of New York. It makes one proud to be a New Yorker to think that in 1939 — while the flames of the Holocaust was consuming European Jewry —  two Jews (who were brothers) headed the Executive and Judicial branches of New York’s state government.
